The Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) has highlighted the importance of mental wellness, emotional resilience and strong family bonds in enhancing the effectiveness of military personnel.
The association made the call during the inaugural edition of its SHINE Seminar, a platform designed to equip naval families with practical tools for personal development, emotional well-being and relationship management.
The event was part of activities lined up to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
Addressing participants at the event, NOWA National President, Aisha Idi Abbas, said the initiative was created to help military families better navigate the demands of naval life, including long deployments, operational pressures and the uncertainties often associated with service.
She explained that military families play a crucial role in sustaining the morale and effectiveness of personnel, stressing that a stable home environment remains essential to professional success.
According to her, the seminar was conceived to provide participants with practical knowledge on emotional intelligence, self-discipline, healthy relationships and personal conduct, all of which contribute to stronger and more resilient families.
Mrs. Abbas noted that the programme’s theme, SHINE—an acronym for Self-Control, Humility, Integrity, Inner Balance, Nurturing Relationships and Emotional Stability—captures the values required for personal growth and harmonious family life.
She also commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, for supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of naval families, while expressing gratitude to stakeholders, facilitators and guests who contributed to the success of the event.
In her remarks, the First Lady of Lagos State, Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, praised NOWA for its sustained commitment to family development and community-oriented programmes.
She acknowledged the Nigerian Navy’s contribution to national security and maritime safety, noting that its impact extends beyond military operations to initiatives that promote social development and national unity.
The Lagos First Lady also lauded the association’s outreach activities, particularly programmes targeted at schools, which she said help expose young people to career opportunities within the Navy while promoting security awareness.
Speaking on the seminar’s focus, Dr. Sanwo-Olu described the theme as timely, given the increasing need for emotional intelligence, self-awareness and mental wellness in today’s fast-paced society.
She emphasized that mental health should remain a continuous priority rather than an occasional discussion, noting that emotionally healthy individuals and families are better positioned to contribute positively to society.
The First Lady encouraged participants to foster understanding, mutual support and unity within their homes, adding that emotionally balanced families provide the stability needed for naval personnel to perform their duties effectively.
The seminar featured sessions led by mental health experts, wellness professionals and etiquette specialists who shared strategies for managing stress, building healthy relationships, developing positive habits and strengthening emotional resilience.
Observers noted that the event underscored NOWA’s broader commitment to supporting the welfare of naval families, reinforcing the view that the well-being of service personnel is closely linked to the strength and stability of their families.
The SHINE Seminar formed part of a series of activities marking the Nigerian Navy’s 70 years of service and contribution to national development.
