Anthropic has called on leading AI research laboratories to slow down the development of the technology. In a new blog post, the company notes that artificial intelligence is developing too quickly and may begin to improve without human involvement, posing serious societal risks.
The post was written by Marina Favaro, head of the in-house research institute, and Jack Clark, the company’s co-founder. It describes how rapidly AI capabilities have advanced in recent years and suggests that slowing down further progress may be a sensible solution.
The main concern is that large language models may reach a stage where they are capable of self-improvement. At the same time, the authors note that this could also have positive consequences – in particular, bringing benefits to science, medicine and other fields. However, fully recursive self-improvement also carries the risk of humans losing control over such systems. To avoid this, more attention needs to be paid to safety, control and methods of AI development.
For its part, Anthropic is conducting research alongside a number of other industry representatives to develop approaches that would allow the development of AI to be slowed down or temporarily halted.
In the coming months, Anthropic aims to organise discussions where policymakers, researchers, civil society and other companies working on AI can help address certain questions raised in the blog post, particularly regarding the recursive self-improvement of systems and the creation of better coordination mechanisms.
