Aspen View Public Schools is adding an administrative procedure to assist everyone in their division with the ever-changing landscape of artificial intelligence (AI).
Superintendent Constantine Kastrinos laid out the plan at the monthly school board meeting on May 27.
“There are just so many aspects to artificial intelligence and how it’s used and/or promoted within schools,” said Kastrinos.
The plan includes definitions of the different AI terms that educators and students need to be aware of and a guided list of roles and responsibilities for everyone from the superintendent to principals and teachers, to students and their parents. There is also a section on acceptable and prohibited uses of the technology.
Students are permitted to use AI to support their thinking, however, they mustn’t allow it to entirely replace their schoolwork. AI generated content can’t be submitted as original work and must only be completed with tools approved by AVPS. The use of AI also needs to be done under the supervision of teachers to ensure proper and safe use.
Kastrinos said one of the main ideas behind developing a procedure like this is to protect people against their private information being spread to unwanted places. Artificial intelligence isn’t necessarily being used in every school, but if a school does decide to start utilizing the tools, they have some strict rules to follow.
“This AI procedure is not a call for an open, free-for-all around tools to be used in schools,” Kastrinos told the board. “If staff go outside of approved tools and forgo certain processes of approval of impact assessment statements and so on, then they’re going to have to face repercussions.”
The procedure has been taken to all the schools in the division for feedback before its release and will now be added to the official administrative procedures list. It will be up to each school’s principal to enforce the policies through their staff during upcoming PD days and staff meetings.
Students are permitted to use AI to support their thinking, however, they mustn’t allow it to entirely replace their schoolwork.
The procedure will likely need to be reviewed every year or even every six months. The artificial intelligence landscape is constantly changing, and adjustments will need to be made, Kastrinos noted.
Board chair Candy Nikipelo believes this is something that will benefit everyone and keep everyone safe and smart with artificial intelligence.
“Simply put, it’s about making everybody be responsible digital citizens,” she said.
