The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening support for healthier communities by broadening criteria for the former ActiveNL Fund – now the Active Living and Wellness Fund.
The broader criteria modernizes support for community-based recreation, physical activity and wellness initiatives while building on the success of the ActiveNL Fund.
This includes the addition of a community capacity building funding stream to help municipalities and community organizations strengthen their ability to plan, deliver and sustain programs that support active living and wellness throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
The enhancements also include a new holistic wellness, healing, and active living stream to support programs, workshops, services, and community initiatives that help individuals achieve greater balance, resilience, health, and quality of life. This approach recognizes that wellness is not simply the absence of illness, but the cultivation of healthy lifestyles, meaningful connections, self-awareness, stress management, and personal growth.
Applications for the 2026-27 program, along with updated eligibility criteria and program guidelines, will be available on the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation website beginning Tuesday, July 14. Applications close on September 29, 2026.
In addition, the enhanced program will:
Recognizing the importance of seasonal programming, eligible applications supporting summer activities that require funding decisions before the program application deadline will receive priority review. Although these requests represent a small percentage of annual applications, expedited assessments will help ensure approved programs can be delivered when communities need them most.
The program supports municipalities, Indigenous Governments and Organizations, local service districts, not-for-profit organizations and other eligible groups in delivering recreation, active living, wellness and community initiatives that improve quality of life throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Quote
“Healthy communities begin with healthy people. The Active Living and Wellness Fund now reflects the way people experience health in their everyday lives. We know that when people have opportunities to improve their mental, emotional and social well-being, they are more likely to embrace active, healthy lifestyles. By expanding support for wellness initiatives in community facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador, we’re helping communities create welcoming spaces where people can connect, build healthy habits and improve their quality of life.
