The Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois has purchased a new property in Freeport that will become the centerpiece of a planned “Healthy Living Campus,” expanding childcare and community services in the region.
The organization closed on the building at 2900 West Pearl City Road, according to a community announcement, marking the next step in its Vision 2030 initiative to combine education, wellness and social programs in one location.
“This investment allows us to do even more. We are creating a place where people of all ages can learn, grow, and thrive together,” CEO Rich Haight said.
The facility, previously known as Stewart Centre West, will serve as the future home of the YMCA’s operations and is envisioned as a centralized campus designed to address changing community needs.
The project comes as families across northwest Illinois struggle to find licensed infant and early childhood care, with waitlists growing and availability limited, according to the announcement.
As part of the expansion, the YMCA plans to increase childcare capacity from infancy through pre-kindergarten and expand after-school programming. Officials said the new campus is expected to boost the number of children served by 70%, increasing access for working families and supporting regional economic stability.
The planned Healthy Living Campus will bring together the YMCA’s Children’s Center, fitness facilities, aquatics programs and other community offerings alongside partner organizations.
“By working alongside trusted partners, we can extend our reach, strengthen our programs, and create lasting impact in the community,” Haight said.
The consolidation is expected to improve access to early education programs, expand health and wellness opportunities and strengthen services for families and older adults. It also aims to increase collaboration among education, health and social service providers.
Brian Stewart, managing member of Stewart Centre West LLC, said the property’s transition to YMCA ownership aligns with its intended long-term purpose.

The YMCA is seeking community and business support to help fund and develop the campus, according to the announcement.
“Together, we have the opportunity to build something that will serve this community for generations,” Haight said. “This is how we create a stronger, healthier future for everyone.”
