Lakeland University continues to expand its athletic offerings with the addition of women’s flag football, led by head coach Zach Finer. As the program begins from the ground up, Finer brings a competitive mindset and a focus on development that extends beyond the field.
Finer’s path to coaching stems from his long-standing connection to sports and competition. “I’ve always been competitive and team-oriented, and coaching gave me a way to stay around the game while impacting others,” Finer said. He emphasized his passion for building teams and helping individuals grow, noting that the opportunity to start a new program at Lakeland was especially meaningful. “It’s a chance to build a culture, create opportunities and be part of something that’s growing fast,” Finer said.
Finer credits his coaching philosophy to several influences throughout his life, particularly his father and former coaches. “I’ve taken pieces from each of them, the way they led, communicated and competed, and mixed that with my own personality,” Finer said. These influences have helped him develop a leadership style that balances intensity with personal investment in his players.
When asked how others might describe him, Finer identified three key traits: competitive, driven and loyal. These characteristics are reflected in the type of culture Finer aims to establish within the program. According to Finer, the foundation of the team will center on accountability, energy and belief. “I want players who love to compete, support each other and take pride in improving every day,” Finer said.
Finer’s motivation is rooted in continuous improvement. Finer emphasized the importance of progress not only in athletics but also in leadership and personal development. “Getting better every day, whether that’s in coaching, leadership or life,” Finer said.
In addition to his athletic background, Finer applies lessons from his experience in business to his coaching approach. Finer highlighted the importance of relationships and communication in both environments. “People will go further for someone they trust and respect, and it’s the same with players,” he said. He also noted that individuals respond to different communication styles, requiring coaches to adapt their methods to effectively connect with each athlete.
Although his coaching style is described as intense, Finer emphasized that his commitment to players extends beyond performance. “That I genuinely care about them beyond football,” he said, explaining that this aspect of his personality becomes more evident over time.
Finer also reflected on key moments that have shaped his perspective. One of his most memorable experiences was winning a state championship during his senior year of high school. However, he noted that his most meaningful experiences as a coach involve witnessing the growth of his players. “Seeing their growth beyond the field means a lot to me,” Finer said.
Outside of football, Finer remains actively involved in sports and personal interests. He coaches high school football, plays golf and has recently developed an interest in buying and selling trading cards. Despite these hobbies, his primary focus remains on building a successful program at Lakeland.
Finer defines success in both athletic and personal terms. “On the field, it’s competing at a high level and building a winning program,” Finer said. “Off the field, it’s developing strong, confident people who are set up for success in life.”
As Lakeland’s women’s flag football program begins its inaugural stages, Finer’s leadership will play a central role in shaping its identity. Through an emphasis on accountability, development and relationships, Finer aims to establish a program that reflects both competitive success and personal growth.
