The victims have not yet been publicly identified, but police did say all were adults.
Carrollton Police are still determining the motive in the shooting, but said the victims and the gunman were known to each other and were involved in a business relationship, and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
NBC 5’s Sophia Beausoleil talked with witnesses at the scene, including one person who shared a video showing a half dozen officers, some carrying long guns, walking into a nearby restaurant.
Julie Solis, who works near where the shooting took place, said they locked down their business when they learned of police activity in the area.
“We just got the notification that there was something going on across the street and we just locked the doors immediately,” Solis said.
Those who live in the area told NBC 5 they have an idea of who might be involved.
“We’re all mourning right now and we’re hoping that the victims currently that are in the hospital, that they get well soon. They’re business owners, they do business here, they’ve been doing that for a long time. I don’t know if it’s because of a conflict between the type of businesses that they’re into, all those investigations I’m sure will come out,” said John Jun. “It happens in any community, but we’re saddened that it happened in our community.”
The shooting covered multiple scenes around the intersection of Hebron Parkway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway. Investigators cordoned off a large part of the parking lot in front of the Gwangjang Korean Market and established a mobile command center across the street in the McDonald’s parking lot. Nearby in Koreatown, police arrested the suspected gunman.
Following the shooting, law enforcement surrounded the H-Mart grocery store off Old Garland Road and the Bush Turnpike.
Witnesses told NBC 5’s Katy Blakey they watched police handcuff a man in a blue shirt outside the store and take him into custody.
A woman who did not wish to be identified told NBC 5’s Candace Sweat her mother owns a business in the Korea Town area.
“I did message her just to make sure everything was okay and she said she knew everyone involved,” she said.
She told us it’s not uncommon for customers and retailers to know each other.
“My mom knows her clients and then her clients, because they know her, they know each other and I guess in that way it’s kind of like a small town,” she said.
Multiple agencies, including the bomb squad and ATF, were seen outside the store as it remained cordoned off with crime scene tape. Police used a robot to investigate a white van in the parking lot before towing it away.
