inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has warned that addiction to gadgets and online games increases the risk of children being exposed to extremist and radical ideologies, necessitating the strengthening of character education in schools.
Rusprita Putri Utami, Head of the Center for Character Strengthening at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, stated that education in the digital era presents a number of challenges for students, which can affect their physical and mental health.
“Today’s educational challenges are closely related to the digital era. The issue we consider particularly significant is how children become addicted to gadgets. This significantly impacts both their physical and mental health,” explained Ruspitra on Friday (5/22/2026).
She noted that, based on data from Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-Terror (AT), the number of children exposed to radical and extremist ideologies has increased significantly through online games.
Children addicted to online games, Ruspitra, said they tend to be passive, even antisocial, when faced with the real world, even though they are very active online.
“Data from Densus 88 shows that the number of children exposed to radicalism and extremist ideologies has also increased significantly through online games,” he said.
Furthermore, she added that children addicted to online games are also at risk of developing eye health problems due to prolonged exposure to screens.
This situation has prompted her office to strengthen character education for children in schools through the 7 Habits of Great Indonesian Children (KAIH) movement.
“These 7 habits sound very simple, but they are actually very powerful in shaping children’s character, starting with independence, self-love, understanding how to care for themselves, understanding how to respect others, and understanding how to cooperate with others,” explained Ruspitra.
She hopes that the massive implementation of the 7 KAIH movement in every educational institution will shape a young generation that is not only adept at mastering technological advances but also wise in using them for the common good.
