On Youth Day, observed annually on June 16, over 100 young women gathered at the Rylands Civic Centre for the Umanyano SA Economic Wellness Bootcamp, designed to empower them with essential skills in entrepreneurship and personal development.
The programme, hosted by Umanyano SA in partnership with Casidra, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), and the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, targeted women aged 18 to 35 and focused on entrepreneurship, leadership, personal development, and wellness.
Attendees of the Bootcamp did not leave empty handed.

Founder Kelly Petersen said the participants were treated to a panel discussion featuring Atembele Zembe from Casidra, Namhla Malgas, Assistant Director for Enterprise Development, and Dr Marietta Holley.
“The speakers shared their experiences and offered advice on entrepreneurship, leadership, and overcoming challenges in the workplace and business environment. Young women also had the opportunity to engage with the panellists during a question-and-answer session,” she said.
Ms Petersen said the focus of the bootcamp was to encourage entrepreneurship and raise awareness about sustainable economic opportunities.
Discussions highlighted the various stages of business growth and challenges commonly faced by entrepreneurs, as well as practical tips on starting and running a successful enterprise.
Organisers included a fitness and wellness session facilitated by trainers Glenn Hans and Jamie Webb. Participants took part in a boxing workout aimed at promoting physical wellbeing, confidence, and self-discipline.
Attendees received a meal, goodie bags, and vanity bags containing essentials and resources to support their personal and entrepreneurial journeys.
Organisers said the event underscored the importance of investing in young women and creating spaces where they can learn, grow, and be inspired. As the country commemorated Youth Day, the bootcamp served as a reminder of the role young women play in building stronger communities and a brighter future.
