There’s a running joke on the internet that everyone has a podcast. The punchline, of course, is that not everyone should have a microphone. Still, for every meandering monologue, there’s a show worth your time. Whatever you’re into—markets, leadership, true crime, or the mechanics of running a business—there’s a podcast for that.
During D CEO’s annual Christmas gift exchange (socks again—of course), we started wondering: What are North Texas’ most respected business leaders listening to as they bounce from store to store in search of the perfect gift? Turns out, they’ve got strong opinions—and solid taste. Here’s what local executives told us they queue up.
“Steve Rinella’s podcast MeatEater is a great listen. On the surface it’s about hunting and the outdoors, but the conversations go much deeper, delving into conservation, ecology, and our relationship with the natural world. I like how it brings together people with very different perspectives but a shared respect for wildlife. It challenges you to see conservation not as a niche topic, but as part of everyday life.”
“I enjoy How I Built This with Guy Raz. There’s a lot to envy with folks who have scaled the ranks in corporations, but being an entrepreneur has so many layers. You’re always accountable as an entrepreneur; there’s nowhere to hide.”
“My favorite is Founders by David Senra. Many of the founders had a unique talent or insight and were encouraged by someone who expressed belief in them. It motivates me to be encouraging and supportive of the talented young people I know.”
“I love listening to leaders talk about their journeys. I find it interesting to learn from their decisions and how they handled challenges and key moments. I especially enjoy the Big Technology Podcast by Alex Kantrowitz.”
“My favorite is Monday Mornings with Mitch. A former NFL center, Mitch Morse is an up-and-coming commentator who I think will be a big star someday because of his personality, his knowledge of the game, humor, and empathy.”
“I listen to Dare to Lead with Brené Brown. I’m also obsessed with her audiobooks—I love when authors read their own work. My main takeaway is the importance of leading with empathy while treating yourself with compassion.”
“Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Wiser Than Me features conversations that she has with other famous women who are generally older and potentially ‘wiser.’ Her podcast is a reminder of the value of listening to and learning from others.”
