METROPOLIS — When Sr. Grandmaster Donald R. Moore, founder and chief instructor of Synergy Combat Arts Inc., looks at two of his students, he sees more than the growth they’ve made in the martial arts training. He’s witnessed their accomplishments and personal growth
Paul Graves and D’alo Robertson are on the autism spectrum. Both have faced communication challenges, including periods of being largely non-verbal.
“Every student’s journey is unique,” Moore said. “Paul and D’alo have shown tremendous determination and have achieved things that many people once believed might not be possible. Their success is a testament to their hard work, their families’ support and their refusal to give up.”
Through training, encouragement and a supportive environment, Graves and Robertson have demonstrated perseverance, courage and personal development.
“Their journey serves as a powerful reminder that martial arts training is not simply about learning physical techniques, but about building confidence, communication skills, self-discipline, social interaction and personal achievement,” Moore said.
Martial arts instruction emphasizes individualized learning, positive reinforcement, structure and personal growth. For students on the autism spectrum, these elements can provide meaningful opportunities to develop confidence, focus, coordination, social engagement and self-expression. Graves and Robertson’s achievements were made possible, not only through their own dedication, but also through the assistance and encouragement provided by fellow students assistant instructor Miss Cady and Deven Graves.
“At Synergy Combat Arts, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed,” Moore said. “Paul, D’alo, Cady and Deven exemplify what martial arts is truly about: perseverance, respect, teamwork and helping one another become the best versions of ourselves.”
