JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Artificial intelligence is growing at a rapid speed as schools, workplaces and communities are incorporating it into everyday lives.
The Beanpath hosted a luncheon where community members asked questions about AI.
Speaker Krystal Chatman, board president of the Mississippi AI Collaborative, spoke on the importance of building confidence surrounding AI.
“I feel that part of the way that we can bridge those gaps and get people involved and make sure that Mississippi is still on the frontlines of this wave is to make sure that people are informed and are confident about asking questions and exploring and tinkering and sometimes breaking things,” Chatman said.
Chatman said it’s important to check the facts, protect your personal data and take a step back when something seems off.
“Being comfortable asking questions about this technology that we are using. It does phenomenal things, it has made so many advances for us in so many fields that we definitely should celebrate it, but also feel comfortable pushing back whenever it just feels a little weird,” she said.
An attendee, Enrique Mendez, said he enjoyed the discussions that took place.
“It was a really pragmatic and down-to-earth discussion of the topics. What’s nice about AI is, as advanced as it is, it’s not hard to understand,” Mendez said.
For the future of AI, Chatman said it’s what you make it.
“One of the things we talked about today is making sure that we are being vocal about what we need, what we like, what we don’t like, what we want and using our voices to make sure that those that are building these tools, people that are interested in coming here to build things here are listening to us,” she said.
