Second-grade students from Mount Calvary and Mount Olive Schools visited the urban farm at Ascension All Saints Family Health Center in Milwaukee on Tuesday to learn about nutrition, healthy eating and how food is grown.
The visit is part of a collaborative wellness curriculum developed by Ascension Wisconsin and Mount Calvary Community Development Corp.
The event featured hands-on activities, including students touring the farm, planting seedlings and participating in interactive discussions with healthcare staff about healthy lifestyles.
During the spring portion of the program, students completed classroom lessons focused on food, nutrition, and wellness before visiting the farm to see food production firsthand and plant seedlings. Medical staff from Ascension also presented a program summarizing key health and nutrition concepts.
The curriculum continues into the following school year, when students will return to harvest produce and participate in a student “salsa party.”
Originally developed by Ascension nurse Jenny Ovide, RN, BSN, the curriculum has expanded through collaboration with educators and healthcare professionals who integrated literacy, science and Wisconsin state standards into the lessons.
Organizers hope the program will inspire children to make healthier food choices and establish habits that support lifelong wellness.
