Sandwich Technology School has received an Excellence in Pupil Development Award, recognising the commitment of staff to students’ character, personal growth and wellbeing.
The award formally acknowledges high standards of provision across the school. During the assessment, Mark Jenner, the adjudicator for the award, praised the breadth of opportunities available through the curriculum, enrichment activities and strong community links, noting the positive impact on students’ development.
Mr Baldwin, Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development, said: “It is really good for the school to gain acknowledgement for all the Personal Development provisions that are included in daily life at Sandwich Technology School.
“The focus on building the student as a person, prepared for adult life, is an important part of the STS culture and something we all strive to achieve.”
STS’ Headteacher, Mr Sharples added: “I am extremely grateful to Mr Baldwin for leading us through this award but I also want to acknowledge the commitment of all staff to students’ personal development, the loyalty and support we have had from parents and the students’ desire to get involved in the many projects, clubs, visits and other opportunities we provide.”
STS plays an active role in the Sandwich community, with students regularly volunteering, fundraising and joining local initiatives.
Mr Sharples said: “This award from Optimus Education is a big moment for our school and recognies the rapid improvements we have made. Since January 2025 we have placed school culture firmly at the centre of our improvement strategy alongside safeguarding, teaching and conduct.
“We have worked swiftly and decisively to dramatically change the student experience at the school. We were extremely pleased with the adjudicator’s report which described STS as “seriously impressive” and a “school for everybody”.
“The adjudicator added that the level of improvement we have made in 16 months would normally take around ten years to achieve.”
The school continues to expand its off-site visit and club offering, most notably the recent introduction of a combined cadet force, with many further exciting projects and opportunities in development for students to look forward too.
