The Detroit News is officially part of USA TODAY Co.’s network of more than 200 newspapers.
USA TODAY Co., Inc., formerly Gannett Co., Inc., has acquired the 153-year-old print and digital news organization from MediaNews Group, owned by hedge fund Alden Global Capital.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
All Detroit News employees have accepted offers of employment from USA TODAY Co. and will remain with the News following the transition, the company said. USA TODAY Co. stressed that readers and advertisers should expect The Detroit News to remain a true news source competitor to the Detroit Free Press, and maintain its distinct voice in the community.
USA TODAY Co, had been running The Detroit News’ business operations since 1989, under a joint operating agreement (JOA) with MediaNews, which ran the Detroit News newsroom. The JOA ended Dec. 28, 2025. USA TODAY Co. announced Jan. 26 that it intended to purchase the News.
