Port Shepstone Regional Hospital recently hosted a vibrant and energetic staff wellness day at Marburg Sports Grounds.

This brought together healthcare workers, nursing colleges, hospitals, and district teams in a celebration of wellness, teamwork, and healthy living.

The event formed part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to promoting employee wellness, recognising that healthy healthcare workers are better equipped to provide quality healthcare services to the communities they serve.
Officially opening the event, the hospital CEO, Zakanzima Mbethe, emphasised the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles in order to reduce the growing burden of comorbidities associated with unhealthy living habits.

He highlighted that diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular illnesses can often be prevented through regular physical activity and healthier lifestyle choices.
Mbethe encouraged both healthcare workers and members of the community to prioritise wellness by incorporating physical activities into their daily routines.

He noted that exercise does not only refer to formal gym activities, but can also include walking, recreational sports, active play, and even everyday household chores.

“The health of our employees directly impacts the quality of care we provide to our patients and communities. As healthcare workers, we must lead by example and encourage healthier lifestyles in our homes and communities.”
The programme included aerobics sessions, sporting activities, traditional games, and wellness-centred engagements aimed at strengthening staff morale, unity, and physical wellbeing.

Participating institutions competed in soccer, netball, volleyball, chess, umlabalaba, and other recreational activities.

The soccer final was contested between GJ Crookes and Shelly Beach Nursing College, with GJ Crookes emerging victorious after a thrilling 2–1 win.

Murchison Hospital claimed victory against Shelly Beach Nursing College in an exciting netball final.
Umlabalaba was won by Nombuso Khoza from Port Shepstone Primary Health Care and chess was won by Simangele Khawula of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

The hospital congratulated all participants, finalists, organisers, and winners for contributing to the success of the event.

The wellness day served not only as a platform for recreation and team-building, but also reinforced the message that wellness is everybody’s responsibility.
